Why is My Washer Banging Around?

Learn the top reasons why your washer may be making loud noises. Troubleshoot and read what you can do about it.

A banging washer can be a cause for concern, as it often indicates an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. Here are several common reasons why your washer might be making loud noises and steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem.

Overloaded Washer

One of the most common causes of a banging washer is overloading. When the washer drum is filled beyond its capacity, the weight can cause it to become unbalanced during the spin cycle. This imbalance leads to the drum knocking against the sides of the machine.

To resolve this, try removing some items and redistributing the remaining load evenly around the drum. Washing large, bulky items like comforters by themselves can also cause imbalance, so add a few smaller items to help balance the load.

Unbalanced Load

Even if your washer isn’t overloaded, an unevenly distributed load can cause it to bang around. When heavy items like towels or jeans cluster on one side of the drum, the imbalance can lead to loud thumping noises.

To fix this, pause the cycle and manually redistribute the clothes. Make sure the load is balanced before restarting the machine.

Unlevel Washer

A washer that isn’t level can also cause banging noises. If the washer’s feet are not making firm contact with the floor, the machine can rock back and forth during the cycle.

Use a level to check if your washer is balanced. If it’s not, adjust the leveling feet accordingly. Tighten the lock nuts to secure the feet once they are level. Ensuring all four feet are in firm contact with the floor can significantly reduce noise and vibration.

Shipping Bolts Not Removed

If your washer is new, it might still have the shipping bolts installed. These bolts keep the drum from banging around during transportation and need to be taken out before using the washer. Read your washer’s manual for instructions on how to remove the shipping bolts properly.

Internal Issues

Sometimes, internal components can cause banging noises. For example, a worn drum bearing or a loose drum spider (the part that holds the drum in place) can create noise during operation.

If you suspect an internal issue, it’s best to contact a professional. Internal repairs often require specialized tools and expertise to ensure the problem is fixed correctly and safely.

When to Call a Professional

Some issues can be fixed easily, but others might require professional assistance. If your washer makes banging noises even after you have balanced the load, leveled the machine, and removed any shipping bolts, it’s time to call in the experts.
